Unathi's Story I first became interested in coding last year in my second year of university when I participated in a physics module called PHY 152. Before that, I knew very little about computer science or programming. But taking part in that program opened my eyes to the possibilities of what you could create with code. We learned the basics of coding by making simple animations and creating real life physics scenarios from our computers. It was so cool to see how a few lines of code could make objects move or respond to user input. I remember feeling so proud when I built my first working scenario! The experience showed me how coding is a really powerful tool for turning ideas into reality. After that, I would look for any opportunity to learn more about computer science. With each new thing I learned, I grew more confident that I could build a future in tech. I definitely want to continue studying Computer Science and hopefully get an internship at a tech company. I might still face challenges as a young student in this field, but after seeing what I could create with code, I know this is the path for me. I want to keep skill-building so I can eventually develop tech that impacts and uplifts my community.

🙋‍♀️ Unathi's Motivation

I want to learn how to code with SheCodes because I see it as a way to create new opportunities for myself and eventually help lift up my community. Growing up, my family struggled a lot financially and I didn't always have access to the same resources or networks as some of my peers. Learning technical skills like coding could open doors for higher-paying jobs and careers that might otherwise be out of reach. With coding skills, I could build apps and products that address challenges and needs specific to my country. There's so much talent and creativity in South Africa that goes untapped. I want to learn the tools to unleash our potential. SheCodes seems like a supportive, woman-centered program that will help me gain the hard skills I need while also building up my confidence as a young black woman in a predominantly male field. Having positive role models and mentors will make me feel like I belong in tech, when so many signals suggest I don't. I'm hopeful that as my skills grow, I can become that role model for other girls like me. It all starts with taking that first step to enroll in SheCodes and invest in myself. I'm excited to start this journey!

🤹‍♀️ Unathi's Hobbies

Cooking - I started cooking simple meals to help my mom out at home. Now I really enjoy experimenting in the kitchen when I can. I'll look up recipes online or try putting my own twists on family dishes.

The Delac Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The Delac Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
