Kgaugelo's Story Growing up, I watched a lot of movies and was always fascinated by the 'geeky' character, the one who probably wears glasses, typing furiously on a computer, and somehow saving the day.I remember thinking, “Wow, that’s so cool. I want to be just like that when I grow up.” But then life happened. For a long time, I thought that dream had quietly slipped away. Then came 2023. One of the lecturers in our department introduced an optional coding class for anyone interested. At first I didn't think much of it but as the lessons continued, something clicked. I realized there was so much I could actually do with coding, and to top it off, I didn't need to start a whole new degree to get into it. It was challenging, sure, but also fun and eye-opening. It gave me a new creative way to engage with science, and pretty much everything. Unfortunately, the classes were suddenly cancelled for reasons I still don’t quite understand, and just like that, I was left hanging… again.

🙋‍♀️ Kgaugelo's Motivation

At first, I couldn't believe my labmate when she kept 'bragging' about how she learned to code in under a year, I argued with her everytime, insisting it wasn't possible. After attending the express intro class, my entire perspective shifted. I was amazed by how much I learned in just one session compared to the months I spent jumping between random YouTube tutorials (no shade!). What started out as a joke has now become a real necessity, my PhD project involves metabolomics, machine learning, and bioinformatics, all fields heavily rely on coding, even if my supervisor says it's not essential, I strongly disagree. I want to understand them beyond just the surface level. For me, it's not just about getting through my project, it's about setting myself apart. Coding opens doors. In SA, bioinformaticians are scarce, and the demand is only growing. Being able to code places me in a unique, niche space where biology meets tech and that makes me more employabe. That's why SheCodes appeals to me so much. Additionally, the structure offers deadlines without being rigid, which is perfect for someone like me who's working on building discipline and self-autonomy, this kind of setup is honestly golden.

🤹‍♀️ Kgaugelo's Hobbies

I really enjoy cooking, especially when all the ingredients are actually there! I love reading, spontaneous karaoke sessions, and getting completely lost in an eerie, mind-warping movie or show. And honestly? It might not count as a hobby, but I sleep like it’s a sport, and I’m in it to win.

The Delac Foundation Mission

Women hold only 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less than men. In many developing countries, over 65% of women lack bank accounts, making it difficult to invest in their education.

The Delac Foundation is changing that. We provide women in developing countries with free coding education, equipping them with the skills to build a better future. In partnership with SheCodes, we offer training in product development, design, and management, empowering women to thrive in the tech industry.
